The project started with a series of research on wooden joinery. Students are instructed to create different joinery methods on their own in able to explore the various, complexity, and functionality of different wooden joinery.  

 

Student to access and explore multiple ways and restriction on prepare digital file and to construct digital detail with plywood. Variables study of joinery  details range from possibility & potentials, strength & weakness, variables with pattern or arrangement, variables with scale, and  best use.

Three Cobbler consist of the combination design of partition, bar table, stall and storage.
In order to serve the multiple function, it was designed with flexible and movable features.
With the use of Fingertip Tenon Joint, Tusk Tenon Joint and Dadd Rabbet Joint, it create the basic box for the component.
Cooperate with another box which made by Bridle Joint, Finger Joint and Triple Dovetail Joint, it achieve the ideal moveable and flexible table with fast assemble system.

Student to access and explore multiple ways and restriction on prepare digital file and to construct digital detail with plywood. Variables study of joinery  details range from possibility & potentials, strength & weakness, variables with pattern or arrangement, variables with scale, and  best use.

 

With the study research of basic joinery, students are encouraged to apply the knowledge to fabricate one piece of multi-functional furniture, with combining and considering potentials of 3 individual joinery’s potentials, to fabricate one easy-assemble furniture/manipulated panel to react to 3 pre-set condition with change of functionality, usage, adaptability to the surrounding condition.

"A children library for community garden."
 

The Taman Keramat community's cohesion has been strengthened since the community garden took shape. In order to provide a safety zone and public space for the children, a community library within the garden was aimed to build for the children to spend time while their parents are down gardening in the community.

'Assemble to Assembly, community activation' project is to build a public library for children of Kg Datuk Keramat within their community garden, and to provide a gathering space for the residents close to community garden, especially the children from Kampung Datuk Keramat. It shall provide a good education starter : toys, reading and maker space for the children , while easing the worries of parents that would like to work in the community farm.

For this library, we have researched and developed this community library with plywood joinery system and bent plywood fabrication, to allow villagers to be involve in the building assembly process with us for the knowledge exchange. To facilitate this we will organise some workshops prior to and during the building of Keramat Library, to allow knowledge sharing and community bonding. Upon the pilot building of this digital fabricated structure, we hope to open source the methodology and perform more in-depth research into the possibility of disaster & community relief architecture.

Now every kid here can read! A joint effort with the community at Rumah Pangsa Au2 Taman Keramat to assemble their very first garden library, with estimately 10 days of prefabrication of all ply-components, and assemble in short 8 days! Although we have to face the challenges of monsoon rain, we're glad say the outcome of library worth every patience and effort!

Site Construction

Not the first time we engage with the community but the very first offical site visit with the key community members and our team members. We go through the site selection, model explaination, construction detail, event detail, etc.

A 1:6 mockup model and bentply prototyping constuct by the team members to test up each constuction detail and get familiar with the constuction steps. It helps to generate problems and issues to avoid during real construction.

A final design disucssion with the community and concrete foundation pouring happening at the same time. The site are officially turns into open platform for further construction.

A prefabrication workshop by the project members in order to prepare needed modular items for construction. The team members get to know each other well during this process.

The construction offically start with the material delivered in and prefabricate work with steel by the community and team members. Everyone busy at the site to help the preparation for the afterward construction.

Installation with modular items that prefabricated by the teams and step by step assemblying bench, bentply, cabinet, roof. With a big help of community, the construction ends well and pass to the community with a celemony event.
