"A kampung without proper public space." That is what we feel after the invitation of visit Kampung Belemang. Therefore, the idea of creating a mobility playscape for the village has been inspired. This is for them to self-modifly the mobility playscape and become their gather space.
‘Public Plays, A Sustainable Playscapes’ is a community project co-initiated by the local community and Colllab, an architecture research lab in the School of Architecture and Built Environment, UCSI University, Malaysia. The project was financially supported by Khind Starfish Foundation ‘Project for Happiness 2020’ and fundraised from the community.

"Time to Play!"
In order to form a successful public place for the community to gather, and what we say ‘it takes a whole village to raise a kid’, we start exploring with gathering children. Kampung Belemang, a village located in Johor, Malaysia has been without a proper playground for years. Therefore, to instil the importance of a community public space, we innovated a participatory and sustainable playscape that could be fun for the children and lead to the gathering of families.
Time to play! It was an amazing journey since the initiative started on August 2020. Joint effort with the community from Tangkak and Muar has been such a pleasure for us, and we are grateful that our sweat and tears are paid off. It is pivotal for us to expand our view of horizon throughout the project, to pay attention on the physical, cultural and social identities that define the community, emphasizing community-based participation as its center. As we thought this project has ended after the module cubes were completed, the process of placemaking has just started and we are looking forward to seeing how ‘Public Plays, A Sustainable Playscape’ can be a pilot of community development in future.

Playscape Assemble
The project members first visit to the village. We get to know the community and finding suitable site for playscape.
The meeting with the community key member to allocate their idea of playscape and dicuss on further thing.
With the help of the local community, we able to prototype the first cube to solve any technical or material issue.
Before the workshop start, we deliver the material and prepare the tools and site ready.
The official workshop event to build up to 4 playscape cube with the help of project members and local community.
After the cube is done, they are transfer to the site and assemble in formation.
