Focuses on adaptive architectural design within operative industrial factories located on the coast of Pangkor Island. Students places great emphasis on understanding the marine heritage of the area and explores the potential of architectural responses to environmental factors, integration with the topography, technological advancements, and the needs of users and programs in the adaptive reuse of this industrial heritage. The aim is to repurpose the existing structures to serve new functions, enabling spaces to be transformed and reimagined over time.

Pangkor Island located off the coast of Malaysia, holds significant importance in terms of its industrial and marine heritage. The island has a rich history of fishing activities, with a vibrant fishing community that has thrived for generations. However, recently declared a duty-free island, its industrial significance has diminished, giving way to a touch-and-go tourism industry. This shift has raised concerns about the sustainability and long-term health of the island's economy and ecosystem.

The lecture start with a series of Research , interview, measure and documentation of selected marine industrial heritage in Pangkor.  These are aim to is embracing the ideology of responsive architecture and exploring its application in the context of still-operational industrial heritage. As local industrial factories continuously adapt to local trades, available resources, processes, and labour, the studio aims to strike a balance between preserving the heritage of these sites and integrating public programs that foster a sense of ownership and connection.

The out come of series of site study did not stop at interview video but also a full set document of the industry. Students document the findings with words, diagrams, layered mapping, and drawings or with any creative media, Compile into a filp / foldable book.

By fostering the sharing of local knowledge, historical anecdotes, and cultural perspectives, the narrative of the industrial heritage is enriched, leading to a deeper appreciation of its significance. The studio recognizes the power of adaptability and aims to create spaces that evolve in response to their surroundings, empowering the community and ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for these industrial heritage sites.

From the finding of trades study and site analysis , this project set as a testing ground of contextual architecture. To seek for architectural strategies that respond to the surrounding context, adaptation to the natural and built environment.

Within the rich context, architecture supposed to response to the surroundings than being an entity in itself. The art of building is not only forms and shapes but to look at how to design a building that adapts to the topography of site through its depths, how to create space that allow you to experience the environment, how to design for the present with awareness from the past.

Student Work Example _ Boat making Factory

Rio Ferdinand Halim

A living museum that exhibits a still-operating factory about traditional boat making, hoping that it can preserve this local heritage that has been passed down through generations.

3 main keywords: BOAT FRAMES ASSEMBLY through OBSERVATION with EXPLORATIVE delivery.

Student Work Example _ Anchovy Factory

Low Jin Hui

Within the context of still operating industrial heritage, a living museum refers to a museum that exists within the factory and showcasing the ongoing operations and processes of making anchovies. Unlike traditional museums that focus on static displays, a living museum of still operating industrial heritage offers visitors the opportunity to observe and interact with process of making anchovies that are actively taking place at Kim Guan Fishery. Interpretive signage, guided tours, or interactive exhibits might be used to provide context and insights into the processes.

"Should things only be preserved in museums when they no longer exist?."

The project started with a series of research on wooden joinery. Students are instructed to create different joinery methods on their own in able to explore the various, complexity, and functionality of different wooden joinery.

Student to access and explore multiple ways and restriction on prepare digital file and to construct digital detail with plywood. Variables study of joinery  details range from possibility & potentials, strength & weakness, variables with pattern or arrangement, variables with scale, and  best use.

The teams first visit to Pangkor Island, understanding the site and local culture. Building the connection bridge with local community and factory owner.

Having good relationship with different parties leads us to visit some potential materials sponsors. This guide us to have direction in material use and design.

An pre-launching exhibition being held at pangkor site to explain to local people what is happening. It also attract attension from community.

Before the real build, student hosted another round of site visit to have complete site measurement. This helps to crosscheck the content and font size.

The live build begins! Teams spend 10 days at Pangkor Island to complete all the exhibition setup and permanent display setup.
