As one of the five major Chinese ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, the Hainanese people have been migrating to Malaysia since the time of the South Migration. Unlike other Chinese ethnic groups, the Hainanese emphasize establishing roots in their new environment. They embrace the foreign surroundings and thrive there.
This Hainanese Museum, located within the Hainan Association in Pudu, chronicles every aspect of the Hainanese people. Through its exhibits, the museum showcases the journey of the Hainanese from the early days of migration, through the wartime period, and into Malaysia's economic development, highlighting all the traits and unique spirit the Hainanese have accumulated to this day.
By using a mezzanine floor and collaborating with content curators, the exhibition route is thoughtfully planned within the limited space, vividly bringing the rich Hainanese culture to life for all visitors.

Exploded Hainan House
A Hainan house interior space getting exploded to several layers.
Each of the layer overlaying their own panel and create an enclosed corridor between their parallel wall.
The inner layer become the centre of the house and guiding the users to view through 4 different direction of content.
The transparency of the space not only provide affluent circulation but also enhance the rich layering of the exhibited content.

Space Narrative
Following the circulation path, the meseum lead the users to experience different zone with its own narrative.
South Migration
The zone elevated the audience through raised deck floor to simulator the feeling on walking on boat. With the sail installation, users can understand the history when their ancestor migrate to South East Asia.
Language & Family Name
With headphones playing Hainanese song and ballad, users can hear how the Hainan slang being spoke. Beside it is the family name wall and their genealogy behind every single family name.
